The German duo delivered an excellent, fast round in just 55.58 seconds and narrowly beat the reigning Olympic silver medalist and current number two in Longines Ranking, Steve Guerdat with Easy Star de Talma from Switzerland. Third place went to Germany’s Mario Stevens on Starissa FRH, who topped the leaderboard in the Oslo Grand Prix last week.

Philipp Schulze Topphoff and Carla NRW – photo Aino Tervonen

The winner Schulze Topphoff enjoys riding in Helsinki and was happy with their round.

“I think already when we arrived, we were really welcomed here, and it felt very good on the course. Our round was not too bad. I had a good beginning from number two to number three. I had one stride too much and was a little too slow but not too slow obviously. And the rest came really good. Carla jumped really good, she wanted to make it as careful as possible and as fast as possible, just looking for the next fence and she made it possible”.

As for their plans for tomorrow, Schulze Topphoff is still unsure but will be aboard of Carla NRW again on Sunday for the World Cup.

“We have to discuss with the plans with her because she is my best and most important horse. She will go for sure for the World Cup and we discuss what we think is the best plan to have the best result in the World Cup. We might go tomorrow for a smaller class for the training or if then go for the Grand Prix, I’m not sure”.

Pohjola International 150 cm, speed.
